project | MuCEM, Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations - 2005
project owner | French Ministry of culture
This project encompasses the essentials of both architecture and landscape given the strength of the site, the presence of the Saint Jean fort, Marseille’s own history, and the subject matter. We voluntarily conceived a project that encompasses not only the subject itself, but also an immense optical machine involving the near, middle, and remote distances of the surrounding landscape. We have incorporated identical materials (Corten steel, translucent and transparent glass, armour stone) to those of Saint Jean fort so to create an elemental unity which clearly identifies the MuCEM not as a singular object, but as a large system of contemporary landscaping upon a site that is already imposing in itself.
