project | Lorrain Museum Extension 2013
project owner | General council of Lorraine
The restructuring of the Lorrain Museum raises the issue of enhancing existing buildings, but also of understanding the different strata they are made of. Indeed, the place includes one of the first buildings of the city, buried within its foundations. The creation of a metal and glass building—a reception space that can federate—forms a place, the starting point for the visit of the site as a whole. The principle of this museography is to free up all the spaces on the ground floor to increase porosity with the city and systematically accommodate the permanent exhibition on the two higher floors. The place thus becomes stratigraphic: the archeological excavations are showcased, the park is enhanced, a leveled ground floor runs from city to park and the upper floors are completely devoted to the museum.
