project | Museum of Underwater Archeology – Port-Vendres – 1999
project owner | City of Port-Vendres
This project is housed within the former 18th-centurty port authority. The initial U-shaped organization upon the descending topography allows for the modern element to settle across the terracing and to redesign the original volumetry in a contemporary manner, like the reconstitution of an amphora in experimental archaeology. The museum’s new roof becomes a graded public terrace, which can be used for open-air concerts, and serves to create a dual functionality of the museum as both an enclosed exhibition space and outdoor public space. All new materials consist of Corten steel and armour stone. The project overlooks the magnificent harbor of Port-Vendres.
